History

From humble beginnings to a thriving community

In the early 20th century, eleven visionary individuals petitioned the Northwest District of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, seeking to establish a church in Sandy. Their call was answered by Reverend H. H. Koppelmann, who became the first pastor, inaugurated in August 1901.

With just $57 in pledges and a generous land donation from Mr. Junker, owner of the Sandy Hotel, the first church building began to take shape. On Christmas Eve 1902, the congregation gathered for their first worship service in the new church. The original building, a testament to our roots, still stands proudly on Pioneer Street.

In 1907, Immanuel Lutheran Church was formally organized. Early pastors served as preachers for various locations near Sandy, often walking long distances over forest trails to places like Damascus, Dover, George, and Estacada. By 1913, improved roads and economic conditions allowed for quicker travel.

Immanuel Elementary School was founded in 1904, initially holding classes within the church. The school building was completed in 1912. With humble beginnings, only seven children attended in 1907, but it steadily grew. The school operated until 1955.

In 1956, ground was broken for a new church building on Pleasant Street, thanks to the dedicated efforts of both congregation members and the community. From timber cutting to window installations, the community came together. Our present church building was dedicated in 1959.

In 2002, Immanuel celebrated its centennial anniversary. In 2008, we marked another milestone with the dedication of an addition, featuring a spacious entryway, additional restrooms, an elevator, meeting rooms, fully paved parking, sidewalks, and landscaping.

Join us in celebrating our rich history and vibrant community at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
